50. A Rose for Emily is one of Faulkner’s short stories. Discuss the character of Emily Grierson and how this character is depicted.
A. Emily Grierson is a symbol of old values, standing for tradition, duty and past glory. She is an eccentric spinster who refuses to accept the passage of time, or the inevitable change and loss that accompanies it.
B. As a descendant of the Southern aristocracy, Emily is typical of those in Faulkner’s Yoknapatwapha stories who are the symbols of the Old South but the prisoner of the past.

1. Dominated by her father’s rigid ideas of social status, she can’t get married during her life time.
2. She carries her head high in dignity as the last Grierson though the whole community believes that she has fallen
